Electronic-cigarettes or E-cigarettes, also known as vapes, are battery operated devices that heat up liquid nicotine (though not always), flavorings, and other chemicals to generate an aerosol that users inhale. E-cigarettes are the new sensation among the teens across the Unites states and are extremely addictive for this vulnerable population. Recent studies said that the teenagers who try e-cigarettes (commonly called vaping) may be poisoning themselves with cancer causing and other chemicals produced during the heating/vaporizing process. E-cigarettes have always been compared with the traditional cigarettes but studies establish that this “safer option is not safe” in its complete sense. While smoking has come down among teens, the overall consumption of nicotine has remained steady. It also exposes the lungs to a variety of chemicals, including those added to e-liquids, and. Because e-cigarettes don’t burn tobacco, teens don’t inhale the same amount of tar and carbon monoxide as they would in traditional ones.

E-cigarettes have been promoted as a safer way to use tobacco and a way to quit smoking. But, the recent studies conducted at the University of California and the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that e-cigarette’s vapour contains carcinogens and other harmful chemicals. A study of some e-cigarette products found the vapor contains known carcinogens and toxic chemicals, as well as potentially toxic metal nanoparticles from the device itself. The study showed that the e-liquids of certain cig-a-like brands contain high levels of nickel and chromium, which may come from the heating coils of the vaporizing device. Other studies confirm significantly higher levels of dangerous chemicals like acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide and croton aldehyde. The use of fruit-flavored products, glycerine and other flavorings in tobacco produced significantly higher level of toxins in the body. Most of the chemicals found in the study are not even mentioned in the ingredients of the vape liquid and are commonly mentioned as “flavors” or “flavorings.”

The recent report on teen smoking shows a sharp 20% of high school teens consuming one tobacco product and they are mostly e-cigarettes which were 11% in the year 2016. California increased the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18-21. Under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations which is designed to protect the health of young Americans, minors can no longer buy e-cigarettes in stores or online.

The popularity of e-cigarettes has been rapidly increasing in part because of the advertisements that sell the lie, that they are safer than conventional cigarettes. E-cigarettes look high tech, so it’s easy to believe the hype that they are a safe alternative to smoking. Unfortunately, they are not. E-cigarettes are just another way of putting nicotine –a highly addictive drug and other cancer-causing chemicals –into the body. The young population of the US is exposed to risks of smoking, which are at an all-time high owing to vaping options.
